Teaching for Deep Comprehension: A Reading Workshop Approach Teaching for Deep Comprehension: A Reading Workshop Approach

Linda Dorn and Carla Soffos describe the process of comprehension as a reflection of the mind-a window into the reader's thoughts. In Teaching for Deep Comprehension they discuss comprehension from a socio-cognitive perspective. The book is framed around three guiding questions: Can comprehension be taught?, How does a model become a barrier to comprehension? And When does a tool become the reason for reading? Linda and Carla mesh complex theories of comprehension with everyday practical examples in such a way as to help teachers develop a better understanding of what it means to comprehend while reading.

Everyday Editing: Inviting Students to Develop Skill and Craft in Writer's Workshop Everyday Editing: Inviting Students to Develop Skill and Craft in Writer's Workshop

Editing is often seen as one item on a list of steps in the writing process - usually put somewhere near the end, and often completely crowded out of writer's workshop. Too many times daily editing lessons happen in a vacuum, with no relationship to what students are writing. In Everyday Editing, Jeff Anderson asks teachers to reflect on what sort of message this approach sends to students. Written in Jeff's characteristically witty style, this refreshing and practical guide offers an overview of his approach to editing within the writing workshop as well as ten detailed sets of lessons covering everything from apostrophes to serial commas.

Britannica Guide to Genetics Britannica Guide to Genetics

The Britannica Guide to Genetics is the ideal companion for students or general popular science readers who wish to know the facts behind the latest research and discoveries. After the Introduction from bestselling science writer and geneticist Steve Jones the book covers the entire history of genetics from Gregor Mendel's first experiments with peas at the end of the nineteenth century to the announcement of the Human Genome Project in 1998. Throughout the twentieth century new discoveries about the qualities of our genes have been heralded as essential leaps of progress in modern science forcing us to ask how much do our genes determine our personalities? What makes us different from other species? But as we enter the twenty-first century and we have begun to manipulate genes and the genome the questions have changed.

Type Write

Type Write is a beginning typing program. The home row (middle row of keys) is introduced first, then other letters are introduced one or two at a time, while continually practicing the letters already learned. There are three components used in Type Write: practicing letter combinations, practicing words, and practicing sentences. The sentences are generally in the form of a short story. For example, the sentences for letter "u" tell about a car: "The car's trunk clunks shut. The car's key turns. The car's engine runs. The car puffs fumes and charges ahead in the blinding dust." The use of meaningless nonsense syllables is kept to a bare minimum in this course; the emphasis is on typing actual words, and using them to make sentences that make sense. Instructions and an assignment syllabus are included in this eBook.
